What are the symptoms of benign prostate hyperplasia?

Benign prostate hyperplasia can affect urination in many ways. In general it can be said that the patients suffer from voiding (obstructive symptoms) and collecting (irritant symptoms) symptoms. Obstructive symptoms include troublesome urination, weak or interrupted urine flow and feeling of incomplete voiding of the bladder. Irritant symptoms include more frequent urination, urgent need to urinate and pain during urination. The troubles during urination caused by benign prostate hyperplasia can be very unpleasant and can lead to significant changes in the patient's life. The gravity of troubles is not always dependent on the prostate size. Similarly unpleasant symptoms can be caused by a normal or even small prostate and, vice versa, an enlarged prostate can cause minimal troubles. Some men can bear even a very unpleasant feelings accompanying urination while others seek help even with moderate symptoms. Patients cope better with the symptoms connected with obstruction and far more frequently are anxious to be rid of the irritant symptoms.
